It is the process through which the United States government allows people of other nationalities who meet certain requirements to be American citizens.

Applicant Eligibility

​

• Be a minimum of 18 years of age;

• Demonstrate that you are a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the United States;

• Have resided in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years immediately preceding the filing date of Form N-400;

• Have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months immediately preceding the filing date of Form N-400;

• Show that you are a person of good moral character and have been a person of good moral character for at least five years immediately preceding the filing date of Form N-400;

• Be able to speak, read, write and understand English;

• Have knowledge of the fundamentals of history, and the principles and form of the government of the United States;

• Demonstrate adherence to the principles of the Constitution and willingness to the good order and welfare of the United States; and

• Be willing and able to take the oath of allegiance.

It should be noted that if the applicant has a father or mother who was a citizen of the
United States, either by birth or naturalization, before reaching the age of 18,
the applicant may have a right to citizenship.
The form to present a claim to citizenship (N-600).

Necessary documents

1. Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization)
2. Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
3. Divorce certificate (if applicable)
4. In the event of an arrest, the disposition of the court must be presented

5. Taxes for the last five years.
6. Translated birth certificate.
7. Copy of residence.
8. Copy of the passport with all the entry and exit stamps.
9. If the applicant is a man who has lived in the United States between the ages of 18 and 26, attach the military service record.
10. Two passport size photos.
11. If there are children or dependents outside the home, proof of support known in English as (Child Support) must be attached.

You will be scheduled for an interview with a USCIS officer. If the officer determines that you are eligible, he or she will give you a date for the  naturalization ceremony. You do not become a US citizen until you have taken the Oath of Allegiance.

What are the citizenship interview and test?

After your application for US citizenship is approved, an interview and a citizenship test will be scheduled. The citizenship test consists of two parts: English language (reading, writing and speaking); and civics and US history. The interview consists of a series of simple questions, many of which will already be answered on the application.

Processing time

In most cases, the process to become a citizen takes approximately six months from the time you apply with USCIS.
